Margaret McWethy Landscape Oil Painting Workshop
March 24, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm$125
Impressionist painter Margaret McWethy will conduct a one-day landscape oil painting workshop on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Warren Building in Wellesley. The workshop is for artists who have previously used oils and want to strengthen their ability to construct the foundation for a good painting. By sharing her methods of simplifying the landscape’s complexity, Margaret will take some of the mystery out of landscape painting. Participants will be lead through a series of exercises to identify a simplified value scheme and carefully chosen main masses. They will be guided to identify a center of interest and effectively use negative space.
After graduating from Swarthmore College with a degree in art history and biology, Margaret sought teachers who based their art on training and careful observation. She studied color with Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown and spent time studying the mechanics of painting. “I have never really left my science background behind. I am always interested in how things work and, more importantly, how to convey this information most effectively to students. My classes are a series of experiments and my students willing participants.” Margaret intends to eventually compile her findings and methods into a book.
A teacher of impressionist still life and landscape painting on Cape Cod and the South Shore, Margaret has won numerous awards and is a featured artist in several books: Lois Griffel’s Painting the Impressionist Landscape, Susan Sarbeck’s Capturing Radiant Color in Oils, and Lee Boynton’s Painting the Impressionist Watercolor. She is a charter member of the New England Plein Air Painters. Margaret’s work hangs in private and public collections in the United States, Europe and Canada. She has sold over 1,000 paintings.
