Sara Scolnick

Boston, MA

In 1995, Sara was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. To date, she has had a variety of operations, including wrist reconstruction to prevent further joint damage. Despite these surgical procedures, as well as medical treatments to mitigate pain, the pain does not totally go away. When Sara began to paint, she realized that she was concentrating fully on her subject matter, seeking out relative values and pushing color. Pain became irrelevant and painting had become her favorite and least invasive form of therapy.

Besides honing skills from classes at MassArt, the Studio School of the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, the Museum of Fine Arts and classes at the Falmouth Art Center, Sara works at her studio in the South End in both oils and in soft pastels, especially for portraits. Whatever medium, her focus has become a quest to discover, convey and maximize the relationships between light and shadow regardless of subject.
