SUMMARY:Art Call for "A Charles River Journey"
DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Society of Artists and the Dedham Art Association in collaboration with the Charles River Watershed Association\, invite New England area artists to a Call for Art for the early 2027 exhibition\, A Charles River Journey: 80 Artists\, 80 Miles. \nArtists are invited to share their visual impressions of the Charles River—from its meandering natural landscapes to the diverse communities it connects\, and its vital role as both a recreational and ecological resource. Seen through the artist’s eye the flora\, fauna\, people\, and places are reimagined as a lasting record of the environmental and social narratives that define our time. \nThis unique exhibition will bring together artists to foster environmental awareness and give homage to the river as a vital thread connecting us to nature and each other. Eighty works will be selected\, representing the rich and varied life of the Charles River along its full 80-mile journey from Hopkinton to Boston. \nArtists living in New England—both emerging and established—as well as students enrolled in New England universities\, are invited to submit one original two-dimensional work. Accepted media include painting\, drawing\, mixed media/collage\, and printmaking. Eighty artworks will be juried into the exhibit and eligible for over $2500 in cash awards.  \nEXHIBITION LOCATION  \nThe Mosesian Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary arts venue in Watertown\, Massachusetts. The 30\,000 square foot center\, located within a former U.S. Army arsenal\, houses two theaters\, exhibition galleries\, classrooms\, and rehearsal studios. Mosesian Arts is located six miles from downtown Boston\, borders the Charles River and Brighton\, and is easily accessible from surrounding suburbs and Metro West. DESCRIPTION:Portraits: Here’s Looking at You\nThe WSA is thrilled to announce the opening of its newly created online exhibition space\, the Huntington Gallery. Elizabeth H. T. Huntington (1878–1963) was a vibrant and inspiring member of the Wellesley community. During the Great Depression\, she brought local artists together\, helping establish what became the Wellesley Society of Artists in 1933. This online exhibition gallery\, named in her honor\, celebrates her vision\, creativity\, and remarkable spirit. This gallery space is for both WSA group member exhibitions as well individual member shows. \n  \n \n\n\n  \nEvery portrait is a story told without words. For centuries\, portraiture has been one of our most vital art forms – a way to preserve memory\, honor identity\, and look deeply into the essence of another living being. This show brings together a vibrant tapestry of faces. Together\, these works remind us why portraits remain so deeply loved: they hold a mirror to our own hearts\, celebrating the universal bonds of life. Discover the fascinating world of encaustic painting with artist Hilary Hanson Bruel!  In this engaging demonstration\, Hilary will introduce us to encaustic—a versatile medium made from beeswax\, damar resin\, and pigment\, applied in layers and fused with heat.She’ll share a brief history of the medium and introduce the tools and materials needed to work with encaustic safely. DESCRIPTION:“The Breaking Sea”\n\nDemonstration with Don Demers\nThe Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library welcome artist Don Demers for a painting demonstration\, The Breaking Sea” on November 8th at 1:30pm. The demo will include the presentation of a small sketch from which he will work into a 16”x 24” oil painting. The scene will portray waves breaking on a shoreline. Don will narrate throughout and explain that he typically does not work from photographs\, but from sketches and studies he does on location. This is a unique opportunity to see Don Demers at work. He is a master at painting the elusive nature of the ocean. \nThis artist demo is free and open to the public. The WSA will be collecting non perishable food items for the Wellesley Food Pantry at this program. Attendees are invited to bring an item or two to help support the Wellesley Food Pantry. \nAbout Don Demers… \n\nDonald Demers is considered to be one of the finest marine and landscape painters in America.The exemplary level of Don’s paintings has placed them in some of the most prestigious public and private collections in the country. Don Demers is a highly sought after instructor and his teaching has taken him around the United States and Europe. His work as an illustrator has been honored four times in the annual exhibition of the Society of Illustrators. Don’s marine paintings have garnered him a record 21 awards at the Mystic International Marine Exhibition including the prestigious Rudolph J. Schaefer Award. He has received awards for his landscape painting from the Joan Irving Museum in Irvine\, California\, the Laguna Plein Air Invitational and from The Guild of Boston Artists. Don is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists\, an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists\, a Signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America\, an elected member of the Salmagundi Club and an elected member of the California Art Club. \n\n
