Joan Twining

Sherborn, MA and Osterville MA

Joan Twining encounters the world primarily using a visual sensibility that led her to pursue various media over many years.  As early as high school, she had a strong mentor in her photography teacher who helped to hone the way she sees and experiences her surroundings and later apply that to her approach to painting.  She has explored photography (medium-format traditional darkroom printing as well as digital arts), ceramics, drawing, watercolor, pastel, and even basketry. She has also studied and practiced landscape design along her quest for a creative outlet.  Working in oil became the greatest desire, and she found an instructor in the Boston School style who helped to give process to that practice. Time spent in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts has been a catalyst for her desire to focus on the beauty of the Northeast landscape and all that it offers. Her goal with landscape painting is to explore the peaceful beauty and historic nature of New England vernacular, and to celebrate the power, importance, and healing of saved or threatened spaces, such as conservation lands and coastal areas.  She has also been commissioned to produce animal portraits, and enjoys the discipline of capturing the essence of an animal’s character.
