John Rufo: “Working with Boats”

The Wellesley Society of Artists and the Needham Art Association in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library invite artists and all art enthusiasts to an artist demo, with John Rufo: Working with Boats on Tuesday, April 13, 6:30-8:30pm at the Wellesley Free Library. Everyone loves a boat! Whether a moored dory, a canoe with an angler working the shallows, a sailboat on a breezy river, a boat captures our imagination in ways simple and deep that transport us literally and figuratively in the world and on the canvas. For John Rufo it has always been the nature of the relationship between the coming and going of the tides and the fertile physical and metaphorical vessel that carries so much weight in our psyche.
The goal of this demonstration is to explore in real time an open-ended process of inquiry, using both dry and wet media to delineate the essence of what we see in the form of the vessel and its surroundings. John will focus on the role of light, color, mark-making, composition, and the uses of different media and tools.
About John Rufo
John Rufo is an artist and architect with over 35 years of practice experience. John attended the Rhode Island School of Design and has degrees in architecture and fine art. John’s artwork ranges in subject from landscape to still life to figural and abstract works. John teaches workshops focused on exploring drawing, painting and mixed-media approaches to making art. His architectural practice actively works on renovating and updating existing and new homes for today’s lifestyle and sustainability goals.
John chairs the Arts Committee at the Copley Society of Art where he has been a member since 2018 and he co-chairs the Arts & Culture Committee at the Charles River Regional Chamber, raising visibility to the arts and advocating for transparency in arts funding, and education on the economic and cultural impact of the arts in our communities. John’s wife is also an artist and art teacher. They both have studio space in their home in Needham, Massachusetts.
