SUMMARY:Art Call for "A Charles River Journey"
DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Society of Artists and the Dedham Art Association in collaboration with the Charles River Watershed Association\, invite New England area artists to a Call for Art for the early 2027 exhibition\, A Charles River Journey: 80 Artists\, 80 Miles. \nArtists are invited to share their visual impressions of the Charles River—from its meandering natural landscapes to the diverse communities it connects\, and its vital role as both a recreational and ecological resource. Seen through the artist’s eye the flora\, fauna\, people\, and places are reimagined as a lasting record of the environmental and social narratives that define our time. \nThis unique exhibition will bring together artists to foster environmental awareness and give homage to the river as a vital thread connecting us to nature and each other. Eighty works will be selected\, representing the rich and varied life of the Charles River along its full 80-mile journey from Hopkinton to Boston. \nArtists living in New England—both emerging and established—as well as students enrolled in New England universities\, are invited to submit one original two-dimensional work. Accepted media include painting\, drawing\, mixed media/collage\, and printmaking. Eighty artworks will be juried into the exhibit and eligible for over $2500 in cash awards.  \nEXHIBITION LOCATION  \nThe Mosesian Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary arts venue in Watertown\, Massachusetts. The 30\,000 square foot center\, located within a former U.S. Army arsenal\, houses two theaters\, exhibition galleries\, classrooms\, and rehearsal studios. Mosesian Arts is located six miles from downtown Boston\, borders the Charles River and Brighton\, and is easily accessible from surrounding suburbs and Metro West. Huntington (1878–1963) was a vibrant and inspiring member of the Wellesley community. During the Great Depression\, she brought local artists together\, helping establish what became the Wellesley Society of Artists in 1933. This online exhibition gallery\, named in her honor\, celebrates her vision\, creativity\, and remarkable spirit. This gallery space is for both WSA group member exhibitions as well individual member shows. \n  \n \n\n\n  \nEvery portrait is a story told without words. For centuries\, portraiture has been one of our most vital art forms – a way to preserve memory\, honor identity\, and look deeply into the essence of another living being. This show brings together a vibrant tapestry of faces. DESCRIPTION:Join the Wellesley Society of Artists and John and Gillian Ross\, owners of Gallery Twist\, Lexington for a primer on “The Nuts and Bolts of Selling Art”\, Tuesday\, September 29th\, 6:30-8pm\, at the Wellesley Free Library Wakelin Room.  This session is designed to help artists navigate the complexities of finding “new homes” for their work by addressing the key issues that matter most to both artists and gallery owners. \nTopics will include: \n\nPricing strategies\nThe importance of presenting/framing artwork\nInsights into what galleries consider when choosing art\nPro-tips (and common pitfalls!) for working with gallery owners\n\nThe presentation will conclude with a Q&A session\, offering an opportunity to get direct feedback from experienced gallery owners. \nGallery Twist is located in the center of Lexington\, Massachusetts\, in a beautiful historic home near the Battle Green. The unique setting in a beautiful historic house\, together with the distinctive way art isdisplayed\, makes it indeed a gallery with a twist. Each year 3 – 5 exhibitions are presented\, offering visitors an opportunity to view an eclectic mix of New England artwork in various styles and media. In this welcoming and un-intimidating environment visitors enjoy what many have called ‘an art experience’. DESCRIPTION:“The Breaking Sea”\n\nDemonstration with Don Demers\nThe Wellesley Society of Artists in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library welcome artist Don Demers for a painting demonstration\, The Breaking Sea” on November 8th at 1:30pm. The demo will include the presentation of a small sketch from which he will work into a 16”x 24” oil painting. The scene will portray waves breaking on a shoreline. Don will narrate throughout and explain that he typically does not work from photographs\, but from sketches and studies he does on location. This is a unique opportunity to see Don Demers at work. He is a master at painting the elusive nature of the ocean. \nThis artist demo is free and open to the public. The WSA will be collecting non perishable food items for the Wellesley Food Pantry at this program. Attendees are invited to bring an item or two to help support the Wellesley Food Pantry. \nAbout Don Demers… \n\nDonald Demers is considered to be one of the finest marine and landscape painters in America.The exemplary level of Don’s paintings has placed them in some of the most prestigious public and private collections in the country. Don Demers is a highly sought after instructor and his teaching has taken him around the United States and Europe. His work as an illustrator has been honored four times in the annual exhibition of the Society of Illustrators. Don’s marine paintings have garnered him a record 21 awards at the Mystic International Marine Exhibition including the prestigious Rudolph J. Schaefer Award. He has received awards for his landscape painting from the Joan Irving Museum in Irvine\, California\, the Laguna Plein Air Invitational and from The Guild of Boston Artists. Don is a Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists\, an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists\, a Signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America\, an elected member of the Salmagundi Club and an elected member of the California Art Club. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Wellesley Society of Artists and the Needham Art Association Annual Joint Artist Demo \nJohn Rufo: “Working with Boats” \n \nApril 13\, 2027 6:30-8:30pm \nWellesley Free Library Wakelin Room \n  \nThe Wellesley Society of Artists and the Needham Art Association in partnership with the Wellesley Free Library invite artists and all art enthusiasts to an artist demo\, with John Rufo: Working with Boats on Tuesday\, April 13\, 6:30-8:30pm at the Wellesley Free Library. Everyone loves a boat!  Whether a moored dory\, a canoe with an angler working the shallows\, a sailboat on a breezy river\, a boat captures our imagination in ways simple and deep that transport us literally and figuratively in the world and on the canvas. For John Rufo it has always been the nature of the relationship between the coming and going of the tides and the fertile physical and metaphorical vessel that carries so much weight in our psyche. \nThe goal of this demonstration is to explore in real time an open-ended process of inquiry\, using both dry and wet media to delineate the essence of what we see in the form of the vessel and its surroundings. John will focus on the role of light\, color\, mark-making\, composition\, and the uses of different media and tools. \n  \nAbout John Rufo \nJohn Rufo is an artist and architect with over 35 years of practice experience. John attended the Rhode Island School of Design and has degrees in architecture and fine art. John’s artwork ranges in subject from landscape to still life to figural and abstract works. John teaches workshops focused on exploring drawing\, painting and mixed-media approaches to making art. His architectural practice actively works on renovating and updating existing and new homes for today’s lifestyle and sustainability goals. \nJohn chairs the Arts Committee at the Copley Society of Art where he has been a member since 2018 and he co-chairs the Arts & Culture Committee at the Charles River Regional Chamber\, raising visibility to the arts and advocating for transparency in arts funding\, and education on the economic and cultural impact of the arts in our communities. John’s wife is also an artist and art teacher. They both have studio space in their home in Needham\, Massachusetts.
